MRU Soccer participated in the first every ACAC Futsal Championships. The season took place between the months of January to March ( winter semester ) whereby the squad participated in two qualifying tournament leading into the final weekend of Championship games.
With an outdoor squad of 28 players, this gave coach Fusco the opportunity to provide playing time for all players. Each tournament, a different squad of 15 players were selected to participate. MRU hosted the first tournament and with home field advantage - won the tournament.
In February, the team commuted back and forth daily to Old College who joins the ACAC Futsal league in 2010. Once again, the team found a way to win and received maximum qualifying points leading into the final weekend of the championship.
The championship weekend was held in Llyodminsiter (Lakeland College). After the 6 hour bus ride, the team struggled this weekend with their play. It was difficult to find a rhythm against the teams that had seen us in the previous two tournaments. However, the team managed to find a way to win once again but it wasn’t quite enough. Although, fighting through some adversity in the games leading into the final, the team faced the Medicine Hat Rattlers who on this day found the net once; and that was good enough to earn the championship beating us 1-0 in the final. We learned a lot this weekend - we were forced to play our best every game and sometimes we try but we don’t achieve our goal. We finished the 2011 Futsal season with a silver medal and look for improvement in 2012.
