Cougars secure another recruit for the fall.

Kimberley Silcox will be joining the Cougars in camp this coming fall as she looks to study Physical Education at MRU and earn herself a position in the Cougars squad.

"I grew up learning to play soccer in the small town of Carstairs and now have been playing center midfield for the Calgary Blizzards for the past four years. I chose to come to MRU because of its friendly atmosphere, small class sizes and the opportunity to become a Cougar."

Kim brings with her the drive and physical play the Cougars will be needed in order to compete in the Canada West Conference come fall.   She's a hard worker and a ball winner - we are going to need her energy in the middle of the park - Coach Fusco.

Cougars take on the ARMY....really!

The Cougars took on the Canadian Military Team in a friendly match 7v7.

The Cougars side was a depleted squad of about eight players with a extra goalkeeper as a reserve and the Military team had 17+ players evaluating their squad before the championships in Germany.

I thought it was a good match overall with the Cougars scoring first and the military team came back to scored two late goals; a late push from the Cougars couldn't find the equalizer.  The score was kept close with some excellent goalkeeping by Kelsey Marklund, (3rd yr).   The Cougars will continue with their Futsal training over the next few weeks in preparations for the ACAC Futsal Championships in Medicine Hat March 9-11.  The Cougars are ranked #1 heading into the tournament.

Futsal Weekend Wrap up

After a somewhat easy round robin schedule the Cougars found themselves in a match that tested their skills in the final vs a Medicine Hat team that was determined to win on the Cougar court.

The team started slowly for the final and this seemed to put the squad behind playing catch up for the entire match.  The team's best performance came Friday during the first match where the team showed great skill in passing and movement off the ball.  Unfortunately as the weekend went on the team couldn't keep this consistency in play.  Without playing MHC at the first tournament in Fort McMurray, the Cougars seemed surprised by the play of the Rattlers.  After 10 minutes into the match the score was a 3-1 lead for the ratters.  With some determination and belief the team battled back keeping the score close at 4-3 but wasn't able to find the equalizer late in the game.

The team will now prepare for the championship weekend later in March in Medicine Hat.  Not only will the Cougars need to play better against the Rattlers in a few weeks time, they will also have to tame the Rattlers fan base who can at times make the place a difficult place to play.

MRU Women's Soccer adds to its youthful talented squad for 2012

On the verge of MRU hosting the ACAC Futsal Tournament this coming weekend, the program has some exciting news to announce for it's preparations and the upcoming Canada West inaugural 2012 fall season.

The program would like to announce the signing of the following prospects.

Kelsey Neal; a small but tenacious attacking player who likes to get forward and buzz around the goal.  We will be looking for Kelsey to get herself into good attacking positions and be productive in around the goal.

Caitlin Specht,  born on June 1994.  A hidden talent with a dominate left foot.  Caitlin has the physical size as first year player that the Cougars feel will benefit her ability of getting on the pitch and making an impact in her rookie season.  "I am looking forward to becoming a part of the Mount Royal Cougars."

Jaydn Sheeler, a member of the local SWU Alliance Youth U18 youth program.  A utility player of sorts but MRU will look for her ability to help the squad from the back.   We will look for Jaydn to get forward in our attack and make an impact in and around the opposing penalty area.

Kristen Bloom, another member of the NSD soccer club.  Kristen is following her family roots by attending MRU and we are excited about that!  Kristen will look to challenge for a starting position and time in the cougars midfield.  Bloom's vision and technical ability will provide this opportunity sooner than later.

Glenna Burrows, another NSD product, Glenna current strengths are making runs down the flank and getting forward - something the MRU Cougars program appreciates and will look to include into the philosophy of the team.

Natalie Maleschuk, a top local Foothills product, will look to fill the centre-back role vacated by 5th year graduate Mallory McNab.  Maleschuk coming out of the local youth program has very good technical ability and will be a physical presence in the centre of the park.

Ashleigh Wroe, a member of the U18 National Champion Blizzard Threat, Wroe with her vision and quality first touch make her a good candidate to get some playing time up front with previous all-star attackers in Hodl and Kinzner.

Exciting times for the Cougars Program; the team will be a young vibrate squad with good depth off the bench and looking to compete for the 2012 season.
